Hopefully I should have some smooth sailing for awhile with this website. August and September were very hectic. Vacation in August to South Dakota. Went to Vegas for Mosley vs DeLaHoya in September and this past weekend I moved to a new place. Just got the the house "networked" so we can both be on the internet at the same time. So hopefully I can get back to spending time with the website. Here's a little catch-up. Frankie "The Educator" Sanchez lost to Steve Martinez on a telefutura card in Texas Friday. Hector Saez' bout with Tommy Aragon, on Sugar Ray Leonard's card in New Mexico, was cancelled due to time issues. I talked with Shann V-How on his way back yesterday and he told me it was out doors and they thought it might rain. Mr V-How told me that Aragon looked soft and that Hector would have knocked-him out. They paid full purse, but he would like to be coming home 3-0 with 2 KO's , instead of 2-0. DaVarryl Williamson got knocked out in the first round by "Baby" Joe Mesi in his biggest fight to date. TOS just looked stiff and a little awe struck. He was never in the fight and was rocked by the first hard punch of the bout. Mesi maybe the real deal. Victor Ortiz won a National Championship at the PAL tournament. This guarantees him a chance in the Olympic trials. He recently left Denver to live in Oxnard, California. He will be training with the camp of Fernando Vargas. Edward Joseph of WCAP won a national title at 152 lbs with a win over Maxell Taylor. Maxell Taylor beat Marvin Cordova in the semi-finals. Ernest Marquez lost to Mark Davis in the semi-finals. Charles Leverette lost to Aaron Williams in the semi-finals. Joseph Silva lost to Jose Hernandez in the quarter-finals. Bam-Bam Conchas lost a 6 round unanimous decision to Cristian Bejarano Benitez, now 10-0 with 5 ko's, on the Morales undercard. Corey Alarcon lost a bout to Jairo Ramirez, on ESPN's friday night fights. Alarcon is now 7-5 but has lost 5of his last 6. Hope that catches us up. Hope to see you today in Black Hawk!

BLACK HAWK, COLORADO (Inside Boxing, September 12, 2003) – Boxing promoter
Jim Smith has announced the date for his first show to be held at the
Mountain High Casino in Black Hawk, Colorado.
The boxing event will be on October 5th and will feature Denver’s highly
touted lightweight Donald Camarena along with outstanding boxers Roy Delgado
and Kenny Lemos.
Smith who promotes under the banner of Poor Boys Boxing has been promoting
boxing in Black Hawk for several years now. Smith continues his boxing shows
in Black Hawk however Smith has moved the shows from the Riviera Casino to
the Mountain High Casino.
For the debuting show Smith has lined up a list of sensational talent that
will be a treat for fans in attendance.
Undefeated Camarena has received national and world wide attention in
respect to his boxing dexterity. Camarena is quickly becoming a hot
commodity in this sport as boxing fans across the country take notice of his
crowd pleasing skills.
Hand speed that would make a “young” Hector Camacho Sr. look as if he were
in slow motion, elusiveness that makes Floyd Mayweather Jr. look like a
standing target and Roy Jones Jr. power is what you will find in Camarena.
And if you look closely during the fight you might even see signs of Naseem
Hamed cockiness.
Camarena encourages all Coloradoans to support and follow his boxing career
and his quest to bring home a world title.
Delgado sports an impressive 12-2 ring record and will display his talent in
front of a home town crown as he will battle local warrior Steve Valdez
(19-32-2).
Valdez didn’t have to think twice about taking this fight, “They offered me
the fight and I immediately said YES.” Valdez feels he can beat Delgado
because “I’m rough and tough and hard to take out. My experience alone will
make the difference”. Valdez coming off a first round loss to power house
Julio Aquino in Philadelphia earlier this year (April 17th) and this fight
will put him back on the winning track.
Delgado also coming off a loss, losing to undefeated fighter Jose Armando
Cruz (14-0) has no intentions of ever losing again. “We took this fight on a
5 day notice, something we probably should not have done, a costly mistake
but we learned a valuable lesson.”
Team Delagdo also mentioned next time a fight is set up against a top
caliber fighter it will have be done in a manner where they have time to
properly prepare and analyze the opponent, no more walking into a fight
blind.
As far as the upcoming fight against Valdez, “We are glad he spontaneously
took the fight, for if he’d took time to think about it, he most certainly
would have realized what a mistake he was making and not signed.”
Lemos, know as the “Sagrado Warrior” intends to show the crowd a heavyweight
fighter can indeed have skills. Most heavyweights tend to rely on punching
power but Lemos combines boxing skills along with the power to knock out
opponents.
Lemos had 35 fights as an amateur, claiming championship in the Colorado
Golden Gloves and twice triumphant in regional competition. With 4 wins and
only one loss Lemos has his professional boxing career on the right track.
Other fighters on tap are Carlos Nevarez, Greeley, Colorado vs. Ricky Byrd,
Grand Junction, Colorado and Daniel Almanza, Fort Collins vs. Felix Rios,
Mexico.
Mark your calendars and plan on an evening of action packed professional
boxing. Come early and have fun in the casino, after the show enjoy a great
dinner at your choice of dining, selections include; Action Buffet, The
Steakhouse at Mountain High Casino, Wolfgang-Puck Express or Chips

I just spoke with Hector Saez (3-0, 2ko's) and he told me, "it's time to step up the competition." He will be taking on New Mexico's Tommy Aragon (7-5-1, 4ko's). Aragon is coming off of an 8 round decision loss to Shawn Gallegos. He was also beaten by Arturo Cruz in 2001. Saez is fresh off his win over Hector Perez on a Showtime card in Houston, TX. This card is a Sugar Ray Leonard card and will be televised on ESPN's Friday Night Fights, October 3rd. You should remember Saez from the 2002 National Golden Gloves where he fought in the semi-finals. We will try to get an RMB Video Session with Hector this coming week.

Jim "Smitty" Smith is having his first boxing card at the Mountain High Casino in BlackHawk on October 5th. The Main Event will be "Ruthless" Roy Delgado taking on "Bad" Brad Jensen. The Co-Main will feature Donald Camarena taking on trial horse Robert Howard from Kansas City. Smitty told me that this should be a "good test" for Camarena because "Howard comes to fight." In talking to Aurelio Martinez, Camarena's trainer, he says "it will be a good tune-up for Donald." He also said that "I will be surprised if Donald doesn't knock this guy out." Camarena was recently offered a bout by Larry Mosley (Shane's younger cousin) for the ESPN card the night before De La Hoya vs Mosley. Donald took the fight but the Mosley camp decided against it. It's too bad, I went to the ESPN card that Mosley fought on and he looked terrible. Donald would have beaten Mosley, no doubt in my mind. Aurelio also told me that Donald has accepted a bout with Demetrius Hopkins (Bernard's cousin) for an ESPN main event in New Mexico, but said he doubts that Hopkins will take the bout. "When I told them he's a south paw they didn't seem to like that, so who knows if they will approve Donald or not." Kenny Lemos will be taking on pro-debuter Frank Elisalde. Daniel Almanza will be taking on a pro debuter from Delgado's named Felix Rios. Tony Morales will also be featured against an opponent yet to be named. I'm sure the change of venue will not change the streak of sell-outs for Smitty's shows, so get your tickets early by calling Smitty at 303-450-9763.

I have read so many articles about the Mosley-De LaHoya fight that it is really making me ill. So I decided to give my two cents and be done with it. Now let me preface this with the fact that I really do not like DLH for several reasons, none of which I will get into.
I went to Vegas for Mosley vs. De LaHoya and I scored it 7-5 for Mosley. Granted our $300 seats were 1 row from the wall, but I had rented binoculars and my camera to watch through. Most people who were at the fight live agreed or at least didn't disagree with the decision, HBO crew withstanding. I haven't had the chance to see the fight on TV, but everyone I've talked with who watched on PPV thought that DLH got robbed.
So let's talk judging first and foremost. The best way to really judge a fight is to:
1) Turn down the volume on the TV. Big George and the boys will sway your opinion as they point out things that they notice and like, not to mention putting their own spin on things. BE YOUR OWN JUDGE!
2) Do it sober and alone. Alcohol and distractions will change the outcome for you. It takes serious concentration to judge boxing. How many trips to the kitchen and bathroom did you make while judging the fight live?
3) Understand that the judges don't get the TV angles and replays. They get their own view and that's it, one side of the ring. Also the judges can "feel" the strength of punches which is impossible on TV. This is called power, and DLH had none on Saturday.
4) Don't watch your boxer. As a fan it is natural to watch the fight with your perspective set on your boxer and what he is doing. You must remember to set your focus between the boxers and simultaneously watch four gloves, two bodies and two heads. Not to mention the elbows, legs and foul areas. Believe me the judges have their work cut out for them.
Give it a try. I will bet dimes to dollars that if you do this you will get a different score. If you are truly being honest with yourself.
Now the next issue is the Compu-Box stats.
DLH landed total of 221 of 616 total punches(36%) vs 127 of 496 (26%) for Mosley
DLH landed 106 of 296 jabs (36%) vs 33 of 268 (12%) for Mosley
DLH landed 115 of 320 powershots (36%) vs 94 of 228 (41%) for Mosley.
You have to also remember to divide these Compu-Box numbers by 12 rounds. If DLH lands 10 jabs and 5 power punches in a round, and Mosley lands 8 power punches and 5 jabs, who wins the round? According to Compu-Box freaks, DLH wins. Now what do the numbers really tell us? Not much, other than the fact that a fight is not judged in number of punches landed. It doesn't matter who landed more punches, what matters is who won the round. Sugar Ray Leonard was famous for "stealing" rounds at the end. Did he land more punches in those rounds? No way! I remember not too long ago "Bones" Adams and Paulie Ayala's first bout. I was outraged. Bones had whooped Ayal a'ss by Compu-Box numbers. I bet if I watch the fight according to judging criteria and stop paying attention to Big George and the boys and the other distractions, I might have a different opinion of the whole thing. But really, there is no way to tell unless you saw and judged the entire fight.
In amateur boxing, the scoring (generally speaking) is based on 3 clean punches equal 1 point. The objective is to score more points, regardless of strength. A knock-down punch is no different than a jab, 3 jabs or 3 knock-down punches equal one point. Using these basic amateur rules, and DLH's "patty-cake" punching, DLH wins, hands down. But this is professional prize fighting, not amateur point boxing. The ultimate objective in prize fighting is to knock your opponent out, isn't it? If punches landed were the criteria used for judging pro boxing we could leave the judging up to Compu-Box, no judges needed, right?
We all hear Harold Letterman before every HBO fight. The judging will be based on the following: clean effective punching, affective aggressiveness, ring generalship and defense with a strong emphasis on clean effective punching, back to you Jim! (Lampley that is, whom I met at a Starbucks in Vegas)
The ring generalship is more or less a wash. Neither man really imposed his will on the other and both basically followed their game plans. Most people agree that Oscar had his best rounds early and that Mosley had his late. Typical of DLH fights, Mosley carried a lot of momentum in the championship rounds.
Obviously Mosley was the aggressor. Was he affective? You bet, he had DLH hurt on many occasions. Not the "he's dizzy and ready to go" type of hurt but the "doubling over and not wanting to stand up straight because the body punching is killing you" type of hurt. Does that not count? Sure it does. I'll take a black eye over a bruised rib any day.
When you were judging, did you pay attention to the defense? Let's look at Compu-Box again. DLH landed 221 of 616 to 127 of 496 for Mosley. The other side of that number is that DLH missed with 395 punches and Mosley missed with 369. Does that give Mosley a 26 punch edge in defense? Only according to the numbers.
I think everyone can agree that there were many close rounds. Wouldn't it then be the judges responsibility to judge the fight taking into account the secondary judging criteria? The judges had to have looked to affective aggressiveness and defense, in addition to who landed more punches in each round.
This was a very close fight. The score was 115-113. There was a guy sitting behind me at lunch on Sunday who was going on and on about how 115-113 was such a blow out. I just wanted to tell him, so badly. This is only 7 rounds to 5. The only thing closer is, 6-6, a draw! If you give the other boxer the nod in a couple of the close rounds it goes the other way.
Next up is the old school, "you gotta take the belt off the champion" crowd. That BS just doesn't fly with me. You don't have to "take the belt from the champ," you have to win more rounds, and thus the fight, period. Nothing more, nothing less. How about Oscar and then reigning WBC welterweight champion, Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whittaker? Do you give "Sweet Pea" the nod in all the close rounds? Then DLH definitely didn't "take the belt off the champion."
Then there is Bobby Boy. This guy has the nerve to dispute a close decision. Let's "investigate" all the gift decisions given to the Top Rank stable of fighters. Paulie Ayala vs "Bones" Adams-I and Erik Morales vs Marco Antonio Barrera-I, in particular. And the "conspiracy theory" of a "fix" is really amusing. DLH is the biggest draw in boxing. Wouldn't a rubber match with Mosley be in the best financial interest of everyone. Wouldn't it make sense to "fix" the fight in DLH's favor? What a clown Bobby Boy turns out to be. He now wants to take his toys and go home. Go ahead and retire, boxing will be fine without you.
Does boxing really need De La Hoya's "investigation?" Into what? You lost a very close and somewhat controversial decision. This is professional prize fighting, believe me it happens all the time, buddy. Get over it. Stop the pouting, or the Nevada Athletic Commission is going to put you in boxer's time-out, young man. De La Hoya is simply a sore loser. Beg to differ? Let's look at his past. He lost to Felix "Tito" Trinidad and blamed everyone but himself. The training camp, the corner telling him it's in the bag, etc. He is a professional prize fighter and should have known better. No one made him give the fight away, sprinting through the championship rounds like there was a finish line. Nonetheless he fired everyone around him. He lost a split-decision to Mosley the first time and did the same thing. I guess if "fire the coach" is OK in football, its OK in boxing too. He even said after the Trinidad loss, "when I lose, it is bad for boxing." This and his "investigation" tell me one thing. De La Hoya believes he is bigger than the sport of boxing. That is truly a shame, considering where the sport of boxing has taken him.
Maybe DLH should be true to his word and retire after losing 3 times to the same man. (amateurs, 147 and 154) If it's really about who is the better man you don't need millions and millions of dollars to find that out. Do it one more time Rocky & Apollo Creed style. No judges, referees or fans. Just two men and a ring. "Ding--Ding."
You made $17,000,000.00, plus PPV percentages. Take the 17 big "Prizes" of "Fighting" and your beautiful wife and go make some Lil' Golden Nuggets. Speaking of nuggets maybe you can promote fast food products. I'll bet you can sell more Oscar De La Chicken Nuggets than you sold records.
Really though, show the class you claim to have and be as gracious in defeat as you are in victory. Isn't that the true test of an athlete's class? Anyone can be gracious in victory, but very few hold true in defeat.
I saw my all time favorite boxer at the steak house in New York, New York. We walk in and sitting right there is Tommy "The Hit Man" Hearns. I was hooked on boxing after watching his first bout with Sugar Ray Leonard on closed circuit t.v. in McNichols Arena, with my father. I found out a few years back that Tommy broke his right hand in the middle rounds of a 15 round bout. When asked why he waited years to tell anybody he simply replied, "This is Sugar Ray's time in the spotlight, I don't want to take from that." Pure class.
Regardless of the controversy, remember that at least the fans weren't ripped off. We were treated to a great fight! Many PPV cards are terrible fights, then we are the ones who get taken. I hope that DLH's sour grapes attitude doesn't take away from Mosley's victory or the great fight itself.
There are many "Prizes" in "Fighting" and although De La Hoya has earned many of them, he must understand that he is not one of them.
Follow steps one through four above and call me in the morning, if you want to go a few more rounds.

Look, I set the Fight Fans Forum up so I could answer some questions in a mailbag and so that Boxers, Fans, Coaches and anyone else could voice their opinions about BOXING. The bullshit that is going on has got to stop, it is ridiculous. I do not have the time to go in and edit and erase the threats, cut-downs and general BULLSHIT you guys post. If I have to keep spending time with it, I will shut it down permanently. Be mature, don't take or intend things personally, lets talk boxing. This website is not some bathroom wall in a truck stop, so stop treating it that way. I will give this thing one more week, after that I will shut it down if necessary. Respect this website! From INSIDE BOXING.com
DENVER,
Colo. (INSIDE BOXING, September 7, 2003) - Heavyweight Kenny Lemos has his
professional boxing career moving in the right direction as he continues to
stay busy. Lemos has been busy fighting every other month, he beat
ex-football player Travis Davis on May 30th then knocked out Derrick Byrd on
July 13th.
Lemos steps back into the ring this Sunday against Louis Monaco who has over
40 fights under his belt. This fight will match experience versus the will
to win. Lemos’ ring record stands at 4-1.
Lemos’ loss came at the hands of Israel Garcia (12-1), yes that’s right
twelve wins and 1 defeat. Lemos, with one fight under his belt traveled to
Oroville, California to fight an opponent of equal experience but once
there, Lemos was told the fighter was no longer available (oldest trick in
the book). And the only opponent for Lemos was Garcia.
Lemos being the warrior he is took the fight (and surprisingly, the
California Boxing Commission approved it!). The fight was a very close one
and although the decision was given to Garcia, viewers who witnessed the
fight clearly favored Lemos. However, Lemos won’t dwell on the past as he
prepares for his future and that’s this upcoming fight against a very tough
opponent.
Lemos doesn’t shy away from stiff competition as you will see on Saturday
when he steps into the ring opposite Monaco (12-26-3).
“We have been training hard for this fight. Kenny is working on precision
punching and elusiveness.” Said Aurelio Martinez who trains Lemos.
Going down the stretch of training with Lemos have been Donald Camarena and
John Kiser. Both have provided much needed work for Lemos.
Monaco brings nothing but experience to the table as he has fought the likes
of Fres Oquendo, Vitali Klitschko, Ross Purity, Eliecer Castillo, Lamont
Brewster, Monte Barrett, Kirk Johnson, Lawrence Clay-Bey and the list of
rated fighters goes on. Monaco even knocked out Buster Douglas but was
disqualified when it was ruled the blow came late and after the bell.
None of that bothers Lemos because on Sunday Monaco will have to deal with
the “Sagrado Warrior” and only the “Sagrado Warrior”.
The fight will take place at The Market Place, Johnstown, Colorado. (near
Loveland)
Tickets can be purchased directly from Kenny Lemos by calling 303.2391466

I just spoke with Trevor Wittman and he gave me an update on JC Candelo and Verno Phillips. With Fernando Vargas going to the injured reserve there is a possibility that JC may step in and take the fight with Tony Marshall. The card is in Tuscon, Arizona on October 3rd. If not, his next opponent may be Larry Marks. Verno on the other hand may get a title shot! He might be able to land a bout with Winky Wright on the undercard of Roy Jones Jr. vs Antonio Tarver. If he lands the bout it will be for Wrights IBF Jr. Middleweight belt. The card doesn't have a venue yet, but is scheduled for November 8th.
Click Here for the RMB Video Session with Verno Phillips
Trevor also told me that Larry "The Pitbull" Gonzalez looked great! He said "Larry looked 10 times better than his debut, so we are moving in the right direction" Larry fought Alex Viramontes, a fighter who was 2-0 with 1 KO. He also had over 60 amateur bouts, so he was no push-over. Trevor admits there is still a lot of work to be done, but with Larry's work ethic, drive and desire "he has the real potential to become a world champion!"

Greetings from Coach Lawrence
I scored a perfect 100 on the level 3 Elite Coaches exam in Colorado Springs. By being certified as level 3, I can now participate in International and Olympic events as a coach. It also gives me authority to administer certification clinincs and exams to level 1 and level 2 coaches. Doug Alleen did well at the Ringside National tournament.
He is superheavyweight national champ for the novice division. Manuel Martinez Perez, fought in the 132 lb novice division winning his first fight and making it to the semi-finals . He lost a decision by one point and is heart broken but we are trying to lift his spirits. He must remember he competed in the largest amateur boxing event in the world , with five countries outside the U.S. participating. Those countries were England, Ireland, Mexico, Katzistan, and Canada. The estimate of boxers participating ranges from 1,300 to 1,500. I am proud of both these guys and now we must prepare for the next event.

(IB - August 30, 2003) - Ayodeji Fadeyi (6-4-1), who fights out of the Denver Police Brotherhood gym, felt he could get a fair shake by fighting Michael Sams in his back yard, Tacoma, Washington.
After all Fadeyi was no stranger to Tacoma. He fought Sams to a draw back on June 22, 2002, a fight he felt he had won. Fadeyi returned to Tacoma twice since, defeating Neil Stephens on March 1, 2003 then losing to Robert Linton on May 31, 2003.
So going back a fourth time was a little more comfortable.
Promoter, judges and referee should know Fadeyi by now and will give him a fair shake, right?
Wrong.
Well, let's leave the promoter and referee off the hook, after investigating this crime, the culprits of this incident fall solely on the hands of the judges.
Why not give a brother a fair shake? Anyone who saw the fight broadcasted on ESPN2 Friday night, clearly saw that Fadeyi won the fight. Fadeyi was the aggressor in all rounds, his percentage of connecting punches was greater than Sams and he threw more punches than Sams, so tell me how'd he lose this contest?
Only one of the three judges awarded Fadeyi the fight making the outcome a victory for Sams by split decision.
I'm sure Fadeyi will have a different attitude next time the call comes in to fight in Tacoma.

I just got off of the phone with Larry "The Pitbull" Gozalez, who fought on the Sugar Ray Leonard card tonight at the Stardust Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas. He called to let us know that he won! The scorecards were 40-35 x 3. He said "I dropped him the first and had him hurt in the third. Just couldn't get him out of there. He was awkward and a little hard to hit sometimes." Congratulations Larry! Way to Represent Colorado!

Verno Phillips thoroughly dominated Michael Lerma in their ten round bout. The bout was the main event of ESPN's Friday Night Fights. Verno used great movement and pin-point punching to pick Lerma apart. Phillips landed at nearly a 50% clip for many of the rounds and punished Lerma with hard power shots. He had Lerma hurt on many occasions but he proved to have the heart and more importantly the chin, to withstand Phillips brutal assault to the body and the head. Phillips should move a step closer to his title shot with the dominating win. JC Candelo was in the crowd and called out "Ms. Vargas", Fernando, while being interviewed by Teddy Atlas and Bob Papa. I would love to see JC get a shot at another world title. More to come.....

We recently caught up with former world champ Verno Phillips. Verno is fighting the main event tonight on Friday Night Fights (8pm start) against Michael Lerma. The winner will move closer to a title shot and the loser goes back to square one. Verno sat down for an RMB Video Session at T's KO Fight Club. There is plenty of sparring footage and some great quotes from Verno, including "I don't really like to talk, I like to bring it!" For the full video session click below.

Local amateur stand out Larry Gonzales, recently turned pro with a convincing 4 round decision over Ricky Byrd. He will be fighting tonight on Friday Night Fights in a "swing bout" He will be facing Alex Viramontes who is 1-0 with his win coming by KO. Larry has been in negotiations with Sugar Ray Leonard and tonight could seal the deal for Gonzalez. An impressive performance tonight and he should be able to secure a promotional agreement with SRL Boxing. If Colorado boxing fans need real prospect to follow, here is your man. Larry Gonzalez capped his amateur career with a National Golden Gloves Championship in 2002. When talking to Larry you can see the fire in his eyes as he is focused and all business. He has taken the attitude that tonight's fight is for the contract, winner take all. Larry is the "Real Deal" with all the skills. Believe me, he will be making some real noise very soon!

Stevie Johnston, a former two-time world lightweight champion, says his upcoming September 13th title eliminator clash with Juan Lazcano is the biggest fight of his career. “It is the biggest fight so far in my career because if I lose I’ve got to go back to square one and if I win, I get a title shot.” Johnston even went so far as to say he would consider hanging up his gloves if he loses.
Johnston must win this bout in order to obtain the fight he covets most — a matchup against “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather is defending his WBC lightweight title in November against Phillip N’dou. Hopefully, the winner of Lazcano-Johnston will be matched against Mayweather should he prevail.
But, Johnston knows better than to look past the dangerous Lazcano, a fighter who always come to fight in great shape. “Stevie has been training extremely hard in the mountains in Colorado,” said Cameron Duncan, his manager. “He’s training like he did against Alejandro Gonzalez and Stevie looked sensational in that fight. This is a big fight for Stevie and he is on his way to winning his third world title.”
In preparation for the showdown with Lazcano, Johnston said he’d been training for two months and has already sparred 83 rounds. “I’m looking for a very tough fight,” Johnston said. “He will be in great shape. He’s a good left-hooker and has a good jab and I know he’ll be ready. This will be a chess match.”
Johnston would not trash talk his opponent, showing respect as Lazcano does for him. He did say that his advantage would be that “I’m a southpaw and I don’t think Lazcano has fought many southpaws.”
“I can’t stand that trash talking stuff,” Johnston explained. “Mayweather does that stuff and I can’t stand it. Why would you trash talk and do all that woofing when you don’t know what that man you will be fighting for 36 minutes has in store for you?”
Johnston said that he is not looking past Lazcano. But, when pressed he says his goal is to win the lightweight title and unify the division. However, he added that if Mayweather moves up to the junior welterweight division (140lbs) that he would definitely take a fight with Mayweather at 140.”
He also said that he would dearly love a third fight with Jose Luis Castillo, one of only two men to defeat Johnston in his professional career. Castillo won a 12-round decision over Johnston in June 2000 to take his title. The two fought a rematch in September 2000 but Castillo was awarded a draw in a bout that many thought Johnston won.
“Definitely, I would love that fight [with Castillo],” Johnston said. “I would like to try to avenge that loss. I avenged my only other loss. (Johnston defeated Cesar Bazan in a rematch after Bazan won the first fight). I thought I avenged it earlier and they only called that a draw.”
However, Johnston reiterated: “First, I’ve got to get past Juan.”

In the process of "fixing" my computer all of my e-mails and addresses were lost. If you sent something in the past month or so please send it to me again. Thanx everyone.

Did you guys miss me? Well I'm finally back. Sturgis bike week was a blast. I will post some of the crazy pictures next week. I come home to find my computer was infected so two weeks and $100 later I'm able to start posting again. On to boxing. I am going to just do a little catch-up article here, with a lot of tidbits. First off we some fights to report on. "Ruthless" Roy Delgado recently fought on an ESPN Friday Night Fights program. He fought the undefeated, Jose Armando Santa Cruz (14-0) and lost by TKO in the fourth round. Roy falls to 12-2.
Frankie "The Educator" Sanchez fought, Chris "The Mechanic" Smith this past weekend on the Ali-Martin PPV. The bout was for the NABA belt. He also lost by TKO, in the eight round.
Joseph Silva was Colorado's only entry into the Under 19 Championships. He lost to Wiley McCanery of St. Louis by a score of 29-18. Silva and McCanery were tied for sixth place, in USA Boxing's National Rankings, coming into this tournament. Speaking of the National Ranking's, Ernest Marquez is ranked #8 at 112lbs, Torrence Daniels is #4 and Miguel Albares is #8 at 119lbs, Aaron Bensinger is #5 at 132lbs, Keith Mason is #1 at 141lbs, Rondale Mason is #10 at 153lbs, Clarence Joseph is #4 at 165lbs, DeAndrey Abron is #3 at 178lbs and Charles Leveritte is #6 at heavyweight.
Davarryl "Touch of Sleep" Williamson will be fighting the main event of HBO's Night of Young Heavyweights. Young? Most anything but young. Night of Up and Coming Heavyweights? Naw most of us would think HBO was giving porn a whirl. He will be taking on somewhat of a "manufactured" contender in "Baby" Joe Mesi. Mesi has been brought along slowly after a good amateur career that culminated with the Olympic Trials. The same trials Williamson competed in, and yes they have sparred, way back when. We will hopefully have an "RMB Video Session" with in the next few weeks.
Speaking of RMB Video Sessions, we will have one next week with Verno Phillips and Larry "The Pitbull" Gonzales. Phillips fights the main event of ESPN's F-N-F's, September 5 edition. He will be taking on Michael Lerma. The card is a Sugar Ray Leonard production and he will be taking a close look at Larry Gonzales. Gonzales will be fighting Jaime Gonzalez of New Mexico.
Mercury Mercedes won her bout, on the road, with local female Michelle Gatewood of Spokane, Washington. Mercedes stopped her in the fourth round.
We also have a Video Session with Natalie Gray who won the silver at the Womens Nationals.
Everyone, please no more threats on the message board. If you continue I will have to start restricting who can post by the remote user #. Just keep it to boxing and nothing personal.
More to come....

July 30, 2003; September 27th will far and away be the most important night
of undefeated heavyweight Joe Mesi's boxing career, "Baby Joe" will make his
HBO debut against heavy-handed knockout artist, DaVarryl "Touch Of Sleep"
Williamson, at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY, in front of a crowd Jack Mesi
predicts "will be a sellout." Mesi is fully aware of this fights
significance, he knows a victory takes his career to another level, placing
him close to, or among, the upper echelon of heavyweights. "This is the
biggest, toughest fight of my career, but I'm working hard and I'm ready.
This is what I've been working so hard for all these years, and I'm prepared
to take care of business," said Mesi.
"To be honest with you, training never stopped from my last fight, (80
second annihilation of Robert Davis) I'm lifting weights and I'm feeling
stronger than ever, Mesi continued, "I've done my research on DaVarryl, I've
seen his tapes, I'm doing my homework, and I know he's doing his. Because
this is a VERY important fight for both of us, and I am confident that I
will do what needs to be done to win this fight."
Some people in boxing feel that Williamson has a suspect chin. Mesi's been
doing his homework, what does he think?
"Yeah I think he does," admitted Mesi.
"I think his chin is suspect, and he's never been in there with anyone who
has my power and speed. I've gotten the proper experience leading up to this
point, and I'm prepared to get the job done on September 27th.
Mesi's biggest motivation seems to be the future. He sees big things
following Williamson, whom Joe says won't last the distance, "I believe I am
going to win this fight by KO. I believe I will stop him.
"A victory does huge things for me, I will be ready to rise to the occasion.
I am anxious to get in the ring, and I am motivated and looking forward to
the big things ahead of me after I win this fight. And that's not to say I'm
taking DaVarryl lightly, because I'm not. I'm just confident," concluded
Mesi.
Father and manager, Jack Mesi wholeheartedly agrees with Joe's KO prediction
and is confident that the HSBC Arena will be sold out regardless of the fact
that fight can't be blacked out locally because it's on HBO.
"We're gonna sell it out Greg. The Philadelphia Eagles play here in Buffalo
the next day, and this is going to a sports weekend the likes of which we
haven't had here for many years."

DaVarryl Williamson squares off against ‘Baby’ Joe Mesi on HBO’s ‘Night of
the Young Heavyweights’ for the N.A.B.F. Heavyweight Title.

Buffalo, NY: In what promises to be an explosive night of boxing, 1996 USA
Olympic Team members DaVarryl ‘Touch of Sleep’ Williamson (18-1, 16) and
‘Baby’ Joe Mesi (26-0, 24) will square off in a twelve-round bout at the
HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. At stake is the North American Boxing Federation
(NABF) heavyweight title. The HBO telecast, ‘Night of the Young
Heavyweights’ will thrust one of these young fighters into the spotlight and
a potential world Top 10 ranking.
An exciting transfusion into the sport of boxing, Williamson has quickly
emerged at the head of the class of up and coming prospects. With just 19
professional fights on his ledger, Williamson has already stepped up the
level of competition to the point that he may be one big fight away from
reaching serious contender status. The next rung in the ladder looks to be
the current North American Boxing Federation (NABF) Champion, ‘Baby’ Joe
Mesi.
The 6-4, 220lb Williamson possesses one of the most lethal right hands in
the heavyweight division, with 16 of his opponents finishing the fights
staring up from the canvas. In his most recent fight, a January outing
against the dangerous and durable Robert Wiggins, Williamson won a hard
fought 10 round unanimous decision, suffering a broken jaw in the process,
but still displayed enough power to drop Wiggins twice. “The jaw is good,
it’s healed perfectly and is a non-factor as far as I am concerned. Right
now I am just focused on my next fight and my next opponent.” said
Williamson.
The Williamson / Mesi bout will be the main event on HBO’s September 27th
telecast, ‘Night of the Young Heavyweights’ and will feature two other
heavyweight bouts, all designed to showcase the future of the Heavyweight
division. “This is my moment to shine. I know what I have to do, and I am
prepared to take center stage in front of 18,000 fans and in front of
millions of viewers and do what needs to be done. I am ready to go into
Joe’s house and take the title back home to Denver,” said Williamson.
‘Baby’ Joe Mesi (6-1, 230lb), has a strong following in his hometown of
Buffalo and with an undefeated record, Mesi will be laying a lot on the line
when he faces Williamson. With notable names Bert Cooper and David Izon on
his ledger, Mesi has taken the necessary steps to reach this level.
Managed by Gary Gittelsohn and promoted by DiBella Entertainment, ‘Touch of
Sleep’ certainly has the backing to support his claims that he will be ready
for a title shot soon. “I’m in a rush, but I know I have the goods. On
September 27th, Joe Mesi will be receiving a “touch of sleep.” Thereafter,
I’ll be looking for a title shot as soon as possible ” said Williamson.
With a winning streak of 15 and a murderous right hand, Williamson has the
goods to back up his expectations.
The HBO telecast will air Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 10 p.m. (EST)

J.C. Candelo followed through on his promise, not in 49 seconds but, with a KO in the eighth round over Julio "The Cuban Lover" Garcia. The following article is from FightNews.com
Candelo spanks Garcia!
By Randy Hammons and Scotti Vandevender at ringside
Sam’s Town Casino in Tunica, MS
from FightNews.com
In professional boxing circles, being the aggressive fighter often wins points on the three judges' scorecards.
On the other hand, that same aggressiveness can also get one knocked out. Particularly if Denver super welterweight contender J.C. Candelo happens to be the opponent.
Miami's Julio "The Cuban Lover" Garcia found out as much Saturday night in the 12-round main event at Sam's Town Casino in Tunica, Miss., and promoted by Art Pellulo's Banner Promotions in association with Brian Young's Prize Fight Boxing
A solid left hand by Candelo to the noggin of the ever-aggressive Garcia put Garcia down and out at the 2:32 mark of the eighth round. With the victory, Candelo (27-5-3, 19 KO) retained his NABF Super Welterweight belt. More importantly, the fight was an eliminator for the No. 2 spot in the IBF world rankings. Candelo earned the right to meet the winner of the upcoming bout between Kassim Ouma and Carlos Bojorquez for the mandatory No. 1 sport. Winky Wright is the IBF champion.
In the co-main event, Armenia's Artyon Simonyan earned a 12-round unanimous decision victory over Mexico's Carlos Contreras to claim the vacant USBA Junior Featherweight championship.
:"I worked on controlling the fight from the outside for two or three rounds. Then after that, I took it to him," said Candelo. "I was trying all my combinations that I had been working on in the gym. He took my right hand and he went down. I wanted to finish him with a clean shot around the temple."
Garcia (25-2-2, 11 KO) began the eight round exactly like he had the previous round by coming forward and then shooting an effective combination to the head. Bt that was the last hurrah for Garcia. Candelo's right hands soon found their mark. It was another right hook that floored Garcia for the first time in the fight. Candelo completed the job with a right hook soon followed by a stinging left hand to the head. that decked Garcia for the second and final time. Referee Fred Steinwinder III stood over the beaten Garcia and administered the count.
"This was what tapes were made for,": said Candelo as he talked about expecting Garcia's straight-ahead style. "He said in a magazine he was going to knock me out. He got knocked out. I fought my fight from the inside or from the outside. He's a one-dimensional fighter.
"Julio Garcia is a great guy," Candelo added. "He is a gentleman in and out of the ring."
"The punch of the fight was the uppercut," said Candelo co-trainer Trevor Whittman. "Our game plan was to hit him from the inside and pick him from the outside. (Garcia) walked right into the shots."
Fightnews had Candelo comfortably ahead 69-64 when the fight ended. Garcia's best round was the sixth when he landed some combinations to the body with Candelo along the ropes.
But the seventh round was pretty much the beginning of the end for garcia. Candelo rocked his opponent with right uppercuts and some more punishing right hands to the head. The round ended with Candelo scoring with two more effective right hands.

J.C. Candelo is fighting the main event on ESPN's Saturday Night Fights. He will be taking on Julio "The Cuban Lover" Garcia (25-1-2, 11 KO's) who is on a six fight win streak including four by knock-out. His last bout was the main event on a Fox Sunday Night Boxing card, where he set the Fox record with a 50 second KO over Chantel Stanciel. When I mentioned the record to JC he said " He thinks he's going to knock me out? I have news for him I'm setting the new record. I'm taking him out in 49 seconds!

After such a stunning (and quick) performance in his last outing against
Robert Davis (28-5-0), it was a surprise to most that "Baby" Joe Mesi (26-0,
24 KO's) would be so quick to take an offer for his next fight. After all,
his next fight was supposed to be his "coming out" fight; a chance for Mesi
to show that he really is a top contender. In the press conference after his
last fight, Team Mesi warned the Buffalo media that "big fights take time".
Well, even by journeyman standards, that usually means more than 28 days,
doesn't it?
Maybe he and his team were just anxious to be the headliner on an HBO night
of boxing. Or, maybe they see another opportunity for Baby Joe to shine in
his home town. Either way, the deal is nearly done.
Coming into the press conference today at Dunn Tire Park in downtown
Buffalo, neither "Baby" Joe Mesi nor DaVarryl Williamson (18-1, 16KO's) had
signed the contract for the fight. But Tony Holden didn't waste much time,
and got right down to business with Tony, Joe Mesi, and Jack Mesi all
signing the fight contract right then and there. Saturday September 27th at
the HSBC Center in Buffalo is the venue.
"We're accepting the challenge from Lou Dibella, and we're going to take
this fight" explained Holden. "And not only is this going to be a great
fight, but the rest of the card is loaded with big heavyweight fights."
Although none of the other fighters have signed fight contracts, the
matchups are likely to be Dominick Guinn (22-0, 17KO's) vs Duncan Dokiwari
(22-1, 19KO's) and Juan Carlos Gomez (36-0) vs Sinan Samil Sam (18-0).
So confident in Joe Mesi is Tony Holden that he has placed a bet on the
fight with Lou DiBella. "I've got a brand new Harley Davidson Fatboy that
I'm willing to bet on Joe. And, I'm expecting to drive it home from Buffalo
that night!" Unfortunately, the bike wasn't there for photo ops...
Also, in an attempt to ensure the strong fan support, Tony Holden has
lowered the ticket prices to only $10 for 800 seats.
"We want to make sure that everyone can get to see this guy fight" Holden
explained. "Even though it's a big HBO fight, we've tried to concentrate the
increase in ticket prices to the ringside seats. And even there, it's not a
considerable increase."
No one would mention the word "sellout", but they are expecting a solid
turnout. Anyone who attended the last Mesi fight in Buffalo will get the
opportunity to purchase tickets for this fight a day early. Tickets for the
general public will go on sale on Friday July 25th. The show will start at
8:30 PM EST, with televised coverage of the three heavyweight battles
starting at 10pm.

First off I would like to say thank you to everyone who contributes to the "Fight Fans Forum" message board. I truly enjoy writing the "Counter-Punch Mail Bag" pieces. This is an idea I got from messages sent in by Anthony and Adrian Mora. They basically said that they were the best at their weight and were willing to prove it against anyone willing to step up to the plate. I took this a step further and decided to make a "140 Pound State Dream Tourney." Thanx Anthony and Adrian.
I have to first make a couple of substitutions in my original bracket. I had Hector Saez facing Larry Gonzales. Problem is Hector fights at 130 pounds. Several people including Mr. V-How, and Hector himself were quick to point this out to me over the weekend. So I am substituting James "The Beast" Gonzales for Hector. I am also going to substitute Daniel Escobedo for Art Cruz. This bracket separates the brothers (Mora's) and Aurelio's boxers (Delgado & Camarena). I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

By Blackbull
(Inside Boxing, July 22, 2003) - First we read reports of a Baby Boy Joe Mesi versus DaVarryl Williamson contest being a done deal, the two would fight each other on a Lou DiBella card featuring a slew of heavyweights. Except it was just jumping the gun. Mesi’s camp quickly cleared that rumor by saying they had no intentions of fighting Williamson. Fighting Williamson would be a step in parallel or backward direction is what we heard from team Mesi, they were looking to move forward. Team Mesi did at the time leave the door open by saying they would only consider fighting Williamson in Buffalo, New York, Mesi's home town.
Obviously, this statement was only made because it was unlikely Williamson would consider going into hostile territory.
Williamson, DiBella and HBO all gave in to Mesi’s request and moved the entire heavyweight show to Buffalo.
Reports again were published announcing the fight between Mesi and Williamson and again without any confirmation.
Press releases were sent out announcing a press conference would be held on July 17 to announce the fight.
Mesi’s camp would postpone the press conference for one week and re-schedule for July 22. The reason for the postponement was simple; the fight had not been signed. The word out of Mesi’s camp was they did not want to look stupid and would not announce the fight until a deal had been consummated between DiBella and Tony Holden who promotes Mesi.
Today is July 22nd the day of the scheduled announcement and we’ve yet to hear anything pertaining to the press conference. This could only mean… well let’s just wait for an official announcement.
I did talk to Williamson and he himself had not heard anything. As a matter a fact Williamson stood by the phone all day making himself available to be patched into the press conference. The call never came nor an explanation.
Mesi needs to make a decision and stop this act of how great he is. He can not defeat Williamson, he will not beat Williamson and he knows it.
In Williamson Mesi will find a boxer with skills, not a boxer who stands right in front of him and allow himself to be hit. Plus, Williamson can dish out his own arsenal of mighty shots.
If you're Mesi, how do you back-out of this fight and say no to the boxing world when your entire requests have been met? How do you say no to a six-figure purse?
You don't, you can’t.
Take your schooling like a man… and your money to the bank.
Meanwhile we will wait for an official announcement.

Forget the reports in the Houston Chronicle and on Fightnews.com as well. Hector Saez beat Hector Perez on Saturday night's Showtime Championship Boxing card. Unfortunately the two Main Event bouts basically went the distance so Hector didn't make it to the televised portion of the show, but he was impressive nonetheless. I got phone calls from Mr. V-How and Hector himself today to give RMB the real scoop. According to Mr. V-How Hector dominated the entire fight scoring knock-downs in the second and fourth rounds. He also said that Perez was in deep trouble in the second and if he wasn't the hometown favorite the bout probably would have been stopped. Hector Saez won by scores of 39-35 X 3 and improves to 3-0 with 2 KO's. Great job Hector and congratulations on your victory!
from InsideBoxing.com
(Inside Boxing, July 19, 2003) - Denver's Hector Saez improves his unblemished record to 3-0 2KOs.
Invade and Conquer is what Saez had to do because he was fighting a Houston local fighter on a Showtime card laced with Texas constitutes. The main event fighters, Rocky Juarez and Juan Diaz both from Houston as well as judges and referees.
Saez however gave judges little to fudge on, as he knocked Perez down in the 2nd, and the 4th and final rounds of their scheduled 4 round contest.
Saez' won his first 2 pro fights by knock outs and this win over Perez is as close to a knock out win you can come to.
Congratulations Hector!

By Brian Doogan of "The Ring" Magazine
It was the third round of a bout that could catapult him into serious contention, but suddenly it looked like Williamson was about to have his hopes squashed. Giving away a staggering 102! pounds to the 6'6", 313-pound Corey "T-Rex" Sanders, Williamson was caught by a left hook that sent him hurtling into the ropes and drew a standing eight-count from the referee. Sanders was carrying a personal best seven-fight unbeaten streak into the ring, and he was confident now that he would make it eight, but Williamson showed his resilience. He turned the tide in the fourth and took advantage of Sanders' diminishing stamina in the fifth, forcing a standing eight-count before a right, left, and another right sent Sanders to the canvas for the full count.
Dubbed "Touch Of Sleep" because of his capacity to bid goodnight to opponents, Williamson was made to win the hard way against southpaw Robert Wiggins in January. Not only did Wiggins take him the distance, Williamson also had to overcome the pain of a broken jaw. Twice he put Wiggins on the floor, a sharp left-right yielding a knockdown in round three and a series of right uppercuts doing the damage into the eighth, but Wiggins was dogged, and Williamson had to show real resolve to come through to win by decision. It's the same resolve that a smallish heavyweight who got a late start in the game must show every time out against the giants of today's heavyweight division.

July 16, 2003; Jack Mesi informed Boxingtalk.com that tomorrow's press conference to announce Joe Mesi Vs. DaVarryl Williamson has been postponed until next Tuesday because the fight hasn't been signed yet. "I am on the other line with Tony Holden (Mesi's promoter) and we have just decided to postpone the press conference until Tuesday of next week. Everything is going well and looking good, but the fight is not signed yet, and we don't want to come out half-cocked for this thing," said Mesi. Should Tony Holden and Lou DiBella consummate this deal, NABF titlist "Baby" Joe Mesi will put his title and perfect record on the line against DaVarryl "Touch Of Sleep" Williamson on September 27th at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY. This will be the main event of HBO and DiBella Entertainment's heavyweight triple header. Dunkin Dokiwari will face Dominick "The Southern Disaster" Guinn and longtime WBC cruiserweight king Juan Carlos Gomez will face Sinan Samil Sam in a battle of unbeaten heavyweights on the televised undercard.

Lemos quickly displayed his boxing skills with elusive movement followed by solid sets of combinations as he set the pace against Derrick Byrd of Grand Junction, Colorado.
A stiff jab followed with a straight right hand takes Byrd back against the ropes. With Byrd against the ropes, Lemos went to work landing a flurry of punches. Byrd tried to counter exchange but missed with his shots due to Lemos’ movement.
Byrd quickly breaks away from the ropes back to the center of the ring. Byrd tries to establish some type of punching sequence but the fast hands of Lemos just beats him to the punch.
Lemos steps in and catches Byrd with a devastating left hook which sends Byrd to the canvass. Byrd is unable to get up and the referee stops the contest.

In other action we had Ricky Byrd defeating Daniel Almanza by unanimous decision. Byrd came out strong and set a precedent in the first round by landing hard solid shots to Almanza’s mid section. In the second round a low blow by Byrd buckles Almanza and would cost him the round. Almanza holds his own in the 3rd round and does very well in the 4th. In the end, the judges saw the fight in favor of Byrd.
Veteran female fighter Marcia Budde shows she is still a fighter to be dealt with as she stops Jenny Tokuoka in the 3 round of a scheduled 4 rounder.
Glenn Mascarenas completely dominates Porfirio Urbina in a 4 round contest. Mascarenas improves his record to 3-3 while Urbina still looking for his first win drops to 0-4.
Previously unbeaten Richard Conchas (3-1) drops a decision to Patrick Thompson (5-1) in a 4 round rock em’ sock em’ battle.
Frankie Sanchez out-works the veteran Benji Marquez in 6 rounds of boxing. Sanchez’ quick hands are the difference in the fight. Sanchez by unanimous decision.

We thank Jim Smith for all the wonderful shows at the Riviera and look forward to his future shows.
