Jim 'Smitty' Smith & Poor Boys Pro Boxing put on the last Melee at the Mountain High card today in Blackhawk, Colorado. The casino has been bought by Ameristar and they will be taking the 400 seat venue and expanding it to about 1200 seats. The construction will take about 18 months. Smitty went out with a bang and left the Melee faithful wishing for more. In the main event Ray Mascarenas came back from taking a knee in the second to make Corey Williams quit on the stool after the third round. In the final bout of the night Danny Almanza got a very raw decision against Grand Junction's Ricky Byrd. I scored the bout 58-56, 4 rounds to 2 for Almanza while judges ringside had it even at 57-57, 59-55 and 60-54. All I can say is what fight were they watching? Almanza clearly landed the harder shots and many more of them. The opening bout was a spirited exhibition between JJ Corn and Art Medina. Both men gave a good show. In the second bout Rafael Butler, who is now based in Colorado Springs, put Brian Sargent away with the first punch landed, a straight right, that nearly sent the 320lb Sargent through the ropes into the officials laps. In a female bout Asia Mays ran out of gas in the 3rd giving Martha Deitchman her first win in her 6th fight. In the best fight of the day, 'Red Hot' Rob Frankel pounded out a unanimous decision win over a very game James Martinez of Grand Junction. Frankel continues to impress making strides of improvement. This fight he showed his inside fighting game and did very well. Frankel used his jab and combination punches to earn a shut out on my card with the first round being even. Another great card by Poor Boys and Jim "Smitty" Smith. Although there will not be any cards at the casino for quite some time, look for Smitty's shows to resurface at the Colorado Marketplace on I-25 between Longmont and Ft. Collins.
