Quick Results From The Rumble At The Ranch by Chris Morris
On a show that was disappointing overall there were some bright spots.
In the main event Victor Villereal moved his record to 7-1-1, 4kos with a second round TKO over Rick Chacon. Villereal was simply too rough and too tough for Chacon. After dominating the first three minutes of action, he was able to stop Chacon in the second when he landed a blow on the head which sent Chacon to the canvass. He was quickly up on his haunches but watched referee Stephen Blea reach the count of 10 and then got up, to the dismay of the fans. Chacon remains winless at 0-6-1.
After the main event Jim 'Smitty' Smith and his fighter Patrick Thompson challenged Victor Villereal and his trainer Raul Utajara to a Colorado/Nebraska title fight on his next card in July. The bout has the approval of both the Colorado and Nebraska boxing commissions and the winner will be the recognized champ.
Smitty started by saying he has a lot of respect for Villereal and Utajara and that they officially "Challenge you to a title fight, do you accept the fight?" to which Utajara responded, "Hell yeah we want it!" So it is on for July.
The co-main event was surely a bright spot as it easily stole the 'Fight of The Night' honors when Terry Butterbaugh and Brian Cummings went toe to toe for the better part of their four rounder, really getting the crowd going. After a close first round that could have gone either way, Butterbaugh's pressure style started to get to Cummings. He staggered Cummings several times in a round two that could have easily seen the fight stopped or scored 10-8 sans the knock down. It was more of the same in the third and fourth as Butterbaugh continued to get the better of the exchanges. I couldn't help but to compare Butterbaugh to 'Irish' Mickey Ward. His decent defense and come forward at all costs offense reminded me of Ward. In the end it was Butterbaugh winning a unanimous decision. After suffering a devastating knock out loss a mere two month prior, Cummings may have made his return to the ring too soon. Butterbaugh keeps his record clean at 2-0, 1ko while Cummings suffers his second straight defeat taking his ledger to 2-2, 2kos and will have some decisions to make about continuing as a pro boxer.
Ricky Lopez didn't let Jesus Garza ruin his 'homecoming' fight as he outclassed Garza before stopping him with a devastating left hook to the body early in the first. Lopez is now 2-0, 2kos. Garza is 0-2.
Marcus Herrera used skills to easily dominate and out point the very durable and tough Richard Flores. It was all Herrera from the opening to the final bell as he hit Flores with clean combinations to pile up the points. Flores is one tough customer and I was surprised he made it to the end. Herrera is now 2-0, 1ko while Flores slips to 3-11, 2kos.
The female bout was a complete farce as Hailie Utter won by TKO after landing a glancing blow to Samantha Williams face, she fell like she was shot. Referee Stephen Blea called time out and tried to get Williams to get up to finish the fight to no avail giving Utter the TKO victory in the first round.
