Rocky Mountain Rumble-ings

After an extended hiatus, the Rocky Mountain Rumble-ings are back, for good.  This edition will catch up the past couple of weeks involving Colorado based fighters.

First up we have no less than three shows coming up in the next 8 weeks or so, with AirTight Boxing coming up first on July 10th.  That show will feature ‘Red Hot’ Rob Frankel in a stay busy bout.  Next up is Jim ‘Smitty’ Smith and Poor Boys Pro Boxing, on August 2nd.  A Colorado/Nebraska State Championship fight between Colorado’s Victor Villereal and Nebraska’s Patrick Thompson will headline the event.  Following that will be C.C. Edwards and his company Moonlight Promotions on September 20th.  The main event being worked on would see Terri Cruz fight for an NABF female title.  We also take a peek at what could be next for IBF titlist Verno Phillips.

We have some big fights coming up for our prospects and a new face in town, Roger Huerta, who is getting his stand up training from one of the best in the business, Trevor Wittman.  So read on for this week’s edition of The Rocky Mountain Rumble-ings.

How "Great" Is Nate?

by Anthony Springer, Photo by Joseph Cordova

Nate “The Great” Marquardt is a nice guy. Really.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
In fact, most UFC fighters are generally kind people outside of the ring, but the man fighting out of Colorado gives off a different kind of nice guy vibe.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a sport where success or failure can live and die by the ability to impose one’s will on a hapless opponent, Nate just doesn’t look like a will imposing person. Sure, he’s 6’0” and muscular, but so are a lot of fighters. The mop full of curly hair and accompanying beard also don’t do much to strike fear into the hearts of his adversaries either. . . . Fans Ruining Boxing?

Anyone with information about who was hassling Paulino Ibarra at the amateur show yesterday, is encouraged to come forward so we can stop this bullshit.  Until there is a price to pay, it will never end.  There was a building full of people so I know someone knows who it is.

This is the stuff that really hurts the boxing scene, especially at an amateur show where we are supposed to be in it for the kids and the boxers who toil in the gym.

Are boxing fans truly CLASSLESS?  Do you realize that the Ibarra family lost a very young daughter, sister, niece recently, do you really think they deserve this?  Then let's as a boxing community show otherwise.

E-mail Information

**Response From Paulino Ibarra

Myself and my family, Outsiderz Boxing Club, would never disrespect boxing.  We represent Colorado and USA Boxing, our team and our family.  So we are sorry for the incident at A-1's show on Saturday.

We were just defending ourselves.  We go to all the shows to support Colorado boxing and Colorado boxers and take our team to box.  But we have people that go to the shows for other reasons and I hope Glenn at A-1 boxing takes action on fixing the problem, so this doesn't happen again.  I know who the problem is and who started this.  So my, and to be brief, a CLASSLESS pro boxer from Colorado has an issue with me but can't handle it in a manly manner.  So he puts it out wherever we meet.  He'll go out of his way to sit ringside and cause problems.  It's a personal problem that should stay that way, but some people have no class.  He took this to Saturday's show and sent someone to attack me outside of the show.  I was with my team and family and we did lose our cool.  So sorry for that to everyone who was there.  We try to never miss a show and show our support.

So my message is this:  I'm not running or hiding but rather trying to keep the peace and respect boxing like we always do and teach my boxers.  I have more pride and class than to drop names.  This trouble maker needs to grow up and be too slick and too quick, to respect and represent himself and his family.

Thank you to all that had my back Saturday.  I been hit harder working mitts with my boxers, so I'm fine, no harm was done to us.

Also thank you very much for keeping our lost loved one in mind, RIP Alysia Ibarra.

Rodriguez Comes Up Short Against Olympian

by Jeff Rodriguez

Robert had a tough match against the 2008 Olympian Roberto Navarro of the Dominican Republic.  Rodriguez fought hard but still came up short losing the bout 15-9.  They were tied in the first 3-3 but Navaro pulled away in the second 10-7 and in the third 14-7. Rodriguez tried to comeback in the fourth but it was not enough ending the bout 15-9. I am told it was a very technical bout with both boxers planning and attacking. Robert would like to thank everyone for their support and he promises that he will be back on the winning side again soon this was his first loss since the Olympic trails last year.

From USA Boxing:

The featherweight division took the ring for the third bout of the event as Robert Rodriguez (Evans, Colo.) battled 2008 Olympian Roberto Navarro of the Dominican Republic. The contest was close through the early going with the two boxers competing to a 3-3 tie at the end of two minutes of boxing. Yet Navarro grabbed the lead in the second and never look back. He claimed a 10-7 lead at the midway mark and extended it to a 14-7 margin as the final round began. Navarro went on to win a 15-9 final decision.

Gomez, Garcia Win At Sky Ute

By Chris Cozzone, NewMexicoBoxing.com

With both headliners winning their bouts, by decision, tonight at the Sky Ute Casino, in Ignacio, Colo., the way is paved for a potential showdown between Joe “Ironman” Gomez (15-1-1, 7 KOs), of Bloomfield, N.M., now campaigning at 154, and Elco “The Animal” Garcia (20-7, 9 KOs), of Durango, Colo. In the main event of the night, Gomez, fighting for the last time as a welter, had a difficult foe in slick counterpuncher Abel Perry (9-2, 3 KOs), of Portland, Ore., but aggression and several right hands gave him the nod on two scorecards—78-74 and 79-73—while the third judge ruled it 76-76. In the co-main, also eight rounds, Durango’s Garcia dominated a game Dan Wallace (9-4, 3 KOs), of Adrian, Mich., through eight rounds to win with scores of 80-72 and 79-73 twice. On the undercard: In a five-round jr. lightweight rematch, Joe Barela (5-3, 2 KOs), of Farmington suffered another dominated loss from Albuquerque’s Scott Furney (3-3-1, 1 KO) who won with scores of 49-45 twice and 50-45; Former IFBA Bantam Champ Adriana Delgado (10-3-1, 4 KOs), of Albuquerque, ended a five-year absence from the ring, but was beaten bloody by Jennifer “Razor” Barber (7-0, 4 KOs), of Northridge, Calif., who won by TKO at 1:02 of round three; and, in the opening bout, Albuquerque jr. welter Vincent Mirabal (1-0) entered the pros with a unanimous decision win over game Silvanus Morris (0-3), of Blanding, Utah. Scores were 40-36 and 39-37 twice.

Adrian Mora Throws Down Challenge

Adrian Mora (19-1-1) would like to publicly express his interest in facing either Donald Camarena or Marvin Cordova on the upcoming Denver card, June 21st.

"I'll fight either guy anywhere from 140 - 150 lbs. Make me a fair offer and we'll have a fight, then we can see where the real "future" fighters from Colorado are headed."

Carwin Crashes Into UFC

Shane Carwin crashed into the UFC with a 44 second first round knock out.  It was highlight reel material as he sent Christian Wellisch's, 9-3, mouthpiece flying across the Octagon.  In KO-ing 'The Hungarian Nightmare' he ran his record to a perfect 9-0, all wins by knock out!  He is yet to see the second round as he has taken care of business in under two minutes in all 9 fights.  He should quickly climb the UFC ranks to a title shot in the next two years.

Carwin was holding the knock out of the night until Silva KO'd Keith Jardine.  Carwin was still rewarded with a $25,000 knock out bonus from Dana White.

Carwin is trained by Trevor Wittman at T's KO Fight Club in Wheatridge.  Wittman is also now the 'stand up coach' for UFC's Golden Boy, Roger Huerta.  We will have an interview with Huerta next week.

“The Future”

The Future of boxing just might be in Colorado

Feyline International, Inc. and InsideBoxing come together to showcase Boxing’s top contenders

Denver (May 20, 2008) - Aurelio Martinez of Inside Boxing and Barry Fey of Feyline International, Inc. have teamed up to bring “The Future”. The Future will be a sensational boxing event putting forth Colorado’s top pugilists. The card will include 5-time champion Donald Camarena , undefeated welterweight contender Marvin Cordova and undefeated heavyweight Jevon Langford.

One card - so much extraordinary boxing talent… All from Colorado!

The event will be held on Saturday, June 21st at the National Western Complex in the events center arena.

The Card:

Donald Camarena has progressed as contender and has claimed five championships; they include the WBC world Youth, WBC Continental Americas, WBC Intercontinental Mundo Hispano championships as well as the Canadian-American-Mexican and the IB Rocky Mountain Regional titles.

Camarena’s losses have come at the hands of world champion Paulie Malinaggi, newly crowned world champion Timothy Bradley and top five rated Herman Ngoudjo in a hotly disputed contest.

“I’ve always had to go fight the top contenders in their own back yards and on their promoter’s cards. I hope now they will come to Colorado and fight me here.” Said Camarena

Marvin Cordova is one of Colorado’s outstanding and undefeated prospects. Cordova is undefeated in 19 contests winning eleven by way of knock out. Cordova welcomes the opportunity to fight in front of a home town crowd.

Jevon Langford played six years with the Cincinnati Bengal’s as a defensive end and started his professional boxing career while an active NFL player.  He would box professional during the off season of football racking up an undefeated record of six wins all by knock out victories.

After retiring from football, Langford took time off from sports in general but will resume his boxing career in Denver where he now makes his home. Reunited with his trainer/manager Aurelio Martinez, Langford is ready to step back into the ring.

Undefeated fighters, Joey Silva and Jose Morales to see action and the long awaited return of Larry “Pitt Bull” Gonzales will take place.

Joey Silva as an amateur was a Golden Gloves National Champion and the only Colorado fighter ever to be selected to participate in the Olympic Education Program in Marquette, MI. In order to be selected to this program a fighter must be rated in the top 10 in the US. As professional, Silva has been sensational winning all eight of his pro contests, four by knock out.

Jose Morales, fought his entire amateur career in Mexico, now living in Denver he has started his professional boxing career on a high note defeating opponents in four contests. Morales has been so impressive in his young pro career that he has been nick named “El Asesino Cara Niño” (The baby face assassin). Morales has no intention of letting up and plans to put on a show for the Colorado fans.

Larry Gonzales was outstanding as an amateur holding wins over world champion Miguel Cotto, on the island nonetheless, and Olympic medalist Andre Dirrell.  The victory over Dirrell was en route to his 2002 National Golden Gloves title at 139lbs. As a professional Gonzales quickly moved his ledger to 8-0, defeating 2 previously undefeated prospects including Curtis Meeks.  His best bout as a pro was his win over highly touted prospect Julio Cesar Garcia, whom he defeated for the Texas State Lightweight title, in only his 7th fight.  Garcia came in a heavy favorite at 27-1, 22 knockouts. Gonzales has been away from the ring for nearly 3 years and will look to make one final run at a world championship."

Ryan Proctor is the new comer to the scene, Proctor will making his professional debut and looks forward to a stellar professional boxing career. Proctor has the reputation of being the most feared sparring partner in the business having sparred with John Ruiz and Calvin Brock.

Quick Results From The Rumble At The Ranch

by Chris Morris

On a show that was disappointing overall there were some bright spots.

In the main event Victor Villereal moved his record to 7-1-1, 4kos with a second round TKO over Rick Chacon.  Villereal was simply too rough and too tough for Chacon.  After dominating the first three minutes of action, he was able to stop Chacon in the second when he landed a blow on the head which sent Chacon to the canvass.  He was quickly up on his haunches but watched referee Stephen Blea reach the count of 10 and then got up, to the dismay of the fans.  Chacon remains winless at 0-6-1.

After the main event Jim 'Smitty' Smith and his fighter Patrick Thompson challenged Victor Villereal and his trainer Raul Utajara to a Colorado/Nebraska title fight on his next card in July.  The bout has the approval of both the Colorado and Nebraska boxing commissions and the winner will be the recognized champ.

Smitty started by saying he has a lot of respect for Villereal and Utajara and that they officially "Challenge you to a title fight, do you accept the fight?" to which Utajara responded, "Hell yeah we want it!"  So it is on for July.

The co-main event was surely a bright spot as it easily stole the 'Fight of The Night' honors when Terry Butterbaugh and Brian Cummings went toe to toe for the better part of their four rounder, really getting the crowd going.  After a close first round that could have gone either way, Butterbaugh's pressure style started to get to Cummings.  He staggered Cummings several times in a round two that could have easily seen the fight stopped or scored 10-8 sans the knock down.  It was more of the same in the third and fourth as Butterbaugh continued to get the better of the exchanges.  I couldn't help but to compare Butterbaugh to 'Irish' Mickey Ward.  His decent defense and come forward at all costs offense reminded me of Ward.  In the end it was Butterbaugh winning a unanimous decision.  After suffering a devastating knock out loss a mere two month prior, Cummings may have made his return to the ring too soon.  Butterbaugh keeps his record clean at 2-0, 1ko while Cummings suffers his second straight defeat taking his ledger to 2-2, 2kos and will have some decisions to make about continuing as a pro boxer.

Ricky Lopez didn't let Jesus Garza ruin his 'homecoming' fight as he outclassed Garza before stopping him with a devastating left hook to the body early in the first.  Lopez is now 2-0, 2kos.  Garza is 0-2.

Marcus Herrera used skills to easily dominate and out point the very durable and tough Richard Flores.  It was all Herrera from the opening to the final bell as he hit Flores with clean combinations to pile up the points.  Flores is one tough customer and I was surprised he made it to the end.  Herrera is now 2-0, 1ko while Flores slips to 3-11, 2kos.

The female bout was a complete farce as Hailie Utter won by TKO after landing a glancing blow to Samantha Williams face, she fell like she was shot.  Referee Stephen Blea called time out and tried to get Williams to get up to finish the fight to no avail giving Utter the TKO victory in the first round.

MMA Results

Jose Beltran easily man handled Corey Williams before forcing Curtis Thrasher to stop the fight near the end of the first round.

Ricky Johnson submitted Cecil Erb with a very slick arm bar in the opening minute of the first round.

In a female Muay Thai bout Jennifer Finn stopped Victoria Seiley in the opening round.

Johnston Gets Bombed By Cherry
by Chris Morris

First round is some feeling out with Johnston shooting straight left to the body and Cherry loading up on right hands. Cherry is getting the jab going as is Johnston. Close round RMB scores it even, 10-10.

Second round sees Cherry picking up the pace and simply outworks Johnston in this round.  Cherry puts Johnston down with a right hand inside the first minute of the third. Johnston gets right back up. Johnston’s legs are simply not under him and he is cannon fodder for Cherry. Johnston lands a straight left to the body and Cherry slips on water in the corner. Johnston makes him miss at the end of the round, but it’s a dominate 10-8 round for Cherry.

Johnston continues to push forward and is having a better round. Cherry begins a body attack and has some success with it. Johnston lands a clean left hand to the head but it has no effect. Cherry is a bit busier and wins the round.

Cherry lands a long right hand in the fifth that sends the former two time champ reeling across the ring. Cherry looks to follow up but Johnston isn’t hurt, more stunned. Cherry starts dipping very low, down to Johnston’s eye level. Johnston continues to land the left to the body but can’t put anything significant behind it. Johnston has a better round but the wobble mid round probably carries it for Cherry. RMB has it a 4-0-1 over the 5 rounds with an extra point for the knock down, 50-45.

Cherry is getting more and more confident and comfortable as he is having his way. Cherry is now making Johnston use his legs, very smart move. He is getting Johnston to give chase and he is trying to get Johnston to walk into one. Cherry lands a 1-2 near the one minute mark and then lands a clean right hand. Johnston is coming straight in, using no angles. Cherry seems to have a total disregard for -Johnston’s power or lack thereof and he is looking to land a show stopper. Cherry wins another round on the RMB card.

Cherry continues to use the ring. Johnston catches him with a clean left hand that snaps his head back, Johnston’s best punch of the fight and Cherry walks through it. To see a once great boxer getting out boxed by someone who couldn’t hold a candle to him in his prime, no disrespect to Cherry, is very sad and shows just how far Johnston has fallen.

Cherry wins yet another round and Johnston turns to his corner with frustration on his face. Is he realizing that he is getting out boxed when he is the boxer? Without power he may be feeling nearly helpless at this point.

They clash heads to open the eighth round. Johnston shows flashes of his great skills a nice reminder of what once was. Cherry seems to be taking the round off as his punch output has decreased significantly in this round. Johnston wins his first round on sheer determination. 79-73.

There is some good back and forth action in the ninth before Johnston gets hurt by a nice combo on the ropes which includes and uppercut and right hand. Johnston goes down and looks shaken. He beats the count and survives the round on legs of rubber. I can’t help but yell ‘throw in the towel’ at the television set as Johnston is taking an unnecessary beating at this point. 89-81 and Cherry is beginning to brutalize a once great champ.

Mid round my phone rings, I know who it is, Dickie Wood. While we are talking about how unnecessary this is and am telling him I wish he was there to pull the plug, Cherry closes the show with a jab and short hard right hand that sends Johnston hard to the canvass, flat on his back with his arm over his face. We hand up and I immediately try to call Jim Rider.

This, in my opinion, is simply the case of a man, Jim Rider, trying to live his dream, vicariously, through a fighter who has taken 3 absolute beatings in his past 5 fights. I hope he will at least be a man of his word and send Stevie to the corner to train fighters and NEVER let him get into a professional prize fight ring again.  That is what he stated in the interview with William Detloff of ESPN boxing.

Stevie, you have nothing to prove, you’ve been to the mountain top and unfortunately back down again. I beg you to please hang them up before you are seriously hurt in the ring. As Teddy Atlas said at the end, you need to get out, while you still have your health.

You will forever be a champ in the eyes of your true fans, including myself.

‘Monster’ Set To Mash On UFC 84: ILL WILL
Shane Carwin To Make Octagon Debut
Story by Robert Kravantki

Shane “Monster” Carwin (8-0-0) will look for a successful debut in the UFC when he takes on Christian Wellisch (9-2-0) at UFC 84: Ill Will.

While Brock Lesnar made instant headlines signing with UFC, with only one MMA fight to his resume, Carwin has flown under the radar, signing a three-fight contract with the UFC. Sporting an undefeated record, in which he has dismantled his opponents all in the first round—his longest match was his first which lasted 2:11 against Carlton Jones in October of 2005—Carwin looks to start making a name for himself in the UFC.

While Carwin’s physique (6’4, 265) compares to Lesner’s (6’3, 265), along with their college days of wrestling and brief stints at trying for the NFL, their situations now contrast.

While Brock moved from a lucrative job with professional wrestling to devote full time with the UFC, Carwin has and still does possess a full time job. After failing to make the roster with the Philadelphia Eagles, he went back to school and got his engineer degree from Colorado Mines School and works as a mechanical engineer.

“A typical day is to get up and go to work,” says Carwin. “On my lunch break I leave and do some cardio, then head back to work. After work, I then train on boxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and Muay Thai.”

Commenting on his two jobs, Carwin speaks with an air of maturity and wit.

“When I was trying out for the NFL, I got injured. It ended my career before it even got started. I just take it day to day, and not worry about my other job or the possibilities in the future. I am thankful that God has given me good health.”

While currently supporting his real life “Fight Club” movie split occupations, he jokingly responds, “My officer manager always gives me a hard time. It’s a tradition for her to tell me how much sick time I have before I fight. But they are all supportive of me, which is really great.”

On his upcoming fight with Wellisch in where Carwin has a significant weight and strength advantage. One would think that Carwin will use those assets to assert his will on his opponent. However, respectful of his opponent, Carwin notes:

“I don’t go in with any specifics in mind because any point in the game a fight can take any turn and you have to be ready for that. Christian is a well rounded fighter, and I know he is dangerous on the ground or standing. I have to be well rounded as well.”

Look for Carwin to use vintage Matt Hughes / Tito Ortiz style of strength, wrestling, and ground and pound to make his mark in his debut at UFC 84.

While the physique of the “Monster” can be intimidating, how scary will it be for future opponents if he dedicates full time to the UFC?

**Carwin trains out of T's KO Fight Club in Wheatridge.
